Budget crisis affects Social Security disability claimants

Published by David Paletta

Effective November 19, 2012, Social Security district offices will close to the public 30 minutes early each day. Beginning January 2, 2013, the district offices will close at noon on Wednesdays.

The primary reason for these reduced hours is the significantly reduced funding provided by Congress under the continuing resolution for the first six months of the current fiscal year.

As of the date of this writing, no one knows if Congress and the President will reach a budget agreement and avoid the 10% cuts to many government programs scheduled to take effect in January 2013.

I encourage all of my Social Security disability clients as well as everyone else dealing with the local offices to be understanding that the inconvenience caused by these reduced hours is not the fault of the staff we deal with in person or on the phone.  Social Security employees are doing the best they can under difficult circumstances.

I will file an update on this important topic as new information becomes available.
